A Learning Experience
by Ryan Baylock, MCV
I
would have to begin by saying it wasn't easy at first. Getting accustomed
to speaking and more importantly understanding a second language is a
process that involves a lot of patience. Looking for solutions to the
problems of the needy children I deal with was and is also difficult. Not
to mention living in a tropical environment, which, now that I think of
it, is actually not too difficult at all. But seriously, I have learned
patience and that assimilating to a culture, a new job and living
experience takes time and that once you become accustomed and the pieces
start fitting in it’s a great feeling. It has been a wonderful
experience because I feel like I've started a brand new life out here. I
meet new people everyday and when I see them again they treat me like a
life long friend. Everyday I learn something new about the history of
Loiza, the environment or just about the individuals I have gotten to
know. Loiza has taught me to listen, to learn and to lend a helping hand
to anyone in need. God has definitely guided me and given me strength and
confidence here in Puerto Rico. I came down here with my things and all I
knew about my future was that I had a place to stay. As I look back I have
come a long way with my literacy and tutoring program at the center and my
job as a teacher's assistant in a public elementary school. More
importantly the children have come a long way as they are continually
learning skills that will help them help themselves in the future so they
could have unlimited opportunities to succeed and find happiness. I
believe that this experience has helped me grow as a person and as a
leader. I have discovered things about myself that I have doubted in the
past and finding those assets of courage, confidence and leadership will,
with the help of God, enable me to make positive change in the lives of
others.
