Alternative Service Break

Faith in Action
Are you or your students looking for a meaningful way to spend a college break?  The Trinity Mission Center coordinates Alternative Service Breaks (ASB) for college students.  ASBs are a wonderful way for students to experience life as a missionary.

Service
Potential service sites include soup kitchens, schools, community centers and parishes.  Volunteers might work with kids, help teach catechism, do construction projects, or visit the elderly.  Service sites often mix tangible projects (i.e. cleaning or construction) with intangible experiences (i.e. visiting shut-ins.)

Reflection
Volunteers are encouraged to combine their faith and service through daily reflections. Our hosts are prepared to lead students in reflections centered on the idea of being a ‘missionary in the providence of your everyday life.’  In addition to the Bible, we utilize writings from our founder, Fr. Judge and other holy men and women in our church history.

Culture
Our missionaries embrace the local cultures and encourage the volunteers to experience this through participation in local celebrations, by eating the local foods, and visiting with those that embody the culture of the area.  The climate and liturgical seasons often allow for unique, local experiences.  Volunteers will find each mission is unique as it encourages expression of the traditional culture in Catholic practices.

Sites
In the past, host sites have included mission in Tucson, AZ; Cleveland, OH; Holy Trinity, AL; Philadelphia, PA; Tijuana, Mexico; and Costa Rica.  Groups of any size are encouraged to contact the Trinity Mission Center and inquire about the possibility of arranging a trip.  If possible, please contact us 6 months before your desired departure so we have adequate time to make the arrangements.  (i.e. for a trip in March, call in September) Costs vary by site.
